"Ivy & Bean" Story Hour with Annie Barrows and Sophie Blackall

Event date:
Saturday, October 12, 2013 - 11:00am

Come down to Bank Street Bookstore for double the fun and double the trouble with Ivy and Bean! Join author Anne Barrows and illustrator Sophie Blackall for a reading of Ivy & Bean Take the Case, the latest book in their award-winning series Ivy & Bean.

Annie Barrows is as hilarious and mischievous as her best-selling series, Ivy and Bean. In-demand at bookstores, conferences and festivals, she has charmed audiences large and small with endless stories about the kooky things kids do, her writing process, and her unconventional ideas about encouraging kids to read. In addition to writing the New York Times Bestselling Ivy and Bean series, she is the author of the international bestseller, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, currently in development as a feature film. She lives in Northern California with her husband and two daughters.

Sophie Blackall is a Brooklyn-based Australian artist. She has illustrated over twenty books for children, including Ruby's Wish (Chronicle Books, 2003) which won the Ezra Jack Keats Award; Meet Wild Boars (Henry Holt, 2005) which won a BCCB Blue Ribbon Picture Book Award and the Founders Award from the Society of Illustrators; Big Red Lollipop (Viking, 2010) which was a New York Times Top Ten Picture Book for 2010; and the ongoing New York Times Bestselling Ivy and Bean series (Chronicle Books). She lives with her family in Brooklyn, New York.

Mordicai Gerstein at Fractured Fables

Event date:
Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 1:00pm

Mordicai Gerstein, Caldecott Medal-winning author, artist and filmmaker, comes to Bank Street Bookstore to read his latest outstanding children's books.

Mordicai will appear as a special guest author at the Fractured Fables puppet show on Sunday, September 15, to share How To Bicycle to the Moon to Plant Sunflowers: A Simple but Brilliant Plan in 24 Easy Steps, and The First Drawing.

Have you ever wondered how to start a moon garden? You'll need a bicycle, a very long garden hose, a borrowed spacesuit and a very large slingshot. In How To Bicycle to the Moon to Plant Sunflowers: A Simple but Brilliant Plan in 24 Easy Steps, kids ages 6-8 will be treated to whimsical step-by-step instructions, illustrated with comic-style panels that cover every detail of the trip from planning to homecoming.

Who drew the first picture? In Mordicai Gerstein's The First Drawing, the primeval artist is… well, you! Children ages 3-6 are invited to imagine themselves transported back in time, where if you want to amaze your caveman family with your artistic communication skills, it's a simple matter of grabbing a burnt stick. Voilá- it's a piece of cake!

In addition to reading his latest books, Mordicai has promised to sing-- perhaps in a puppet duet-- the Cream of Wheat jingle from radio's legendary Let's Pretend fairytale show!

Registration is recommended. Please call Bank Street Bookstore at 212-678-1654 or join the Mordicai Gerstein Fractured Fables Facebook event page.
