Expert Advice from Patty Weiner on Taking Your Child to the Doctor

Last weekend Patty Weiner, founder of the Bank Street College Child Life program, presented a family workshop at Bank Street Bookstore called "Taking Your Child to the Doctor or Hospital." Patty's tips were so helpful, we invited her back. On Sunday, September 28 at 11:00 a.m., Patty makes a return visit for a medical art collage party! -- a fun, creative, and caring way to prep young children for necessary doctor or hospital appointments. Patty (pictured second from left in photo below) shares easy tips for making doctor visits successful.

Unexpected Guest

One of the pleasures of working at a bookstore is meeting the talented people who create children's books. Jennifer Hansen Rolli is one such person. She wrote and illustrated a favorite summertime title, "Just One More," about Ruby, a child who lives large, always believing that more is more. Jennifer graciously stopped by Bank Street Bookstore to sign "Just One More." Pick up a copy at the bookstore soon!

Two Friends, One Fridge

The main character in "Maddi's Fridge" lives in a home with lots of love, but not enough food. As written by Lois Brandt, the book allows children to begin exploring what it means to be hungry. Illustrator Vin Vogel, below, who portrays Maddi and her friend Sofia as charming, contemporary kids, will appear at Bank Street Bookstore September 13 as we read "Maddi's Fridge" to all who attend Saturday storytime at 10:30 a.m.

Celebration of the Life of Maya Angelou

Celebrate the life of Maya Angelou on Friday, September 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the Riverside Church, 490 Riverside Drive. The service will feature tributes and reflections from family, friends, and writers who were influenced by Dr. Angelou's outstanding accomplishments. A longtime favorite book at Bank Street Bookstore is "Life Doesn't Frighten Me," poems by Maya Angelou and paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat.

What's New at Curt's Zoo

Store manager Andy Laties and author/musician Curt Gebhart helped lead Bank Street Bookstore's weekend puppet show Sunday afternoon, September 7, in a read-aloud and sing-along. Other willing and very able participants included kids and families who loved seeing -- and hearing -- Curt's book "At the Zoo," filled with awesome animal images and sounds.

We Signed A Lease for New Location

Bank Street Bookstore will say goodbye to its current location at 112th and Broadway in March 2014. The new location is at 107th and Broadway.
Bank Street Bookstore will say goodbye to its current location at 112th and Broadway in March 2014. The new location is at 107th and Broadway.

Two and a half years ago I was selected to replace Bank Street Bookstore's irreplaceable longtime manager, Beth Puffer. My task was to help save the bookstore from closure after years of rent increases had eroded its sustainability. Today I am delighted to report that a new storefront on the corner of 107th Street and Broadway has been secured -- at a dramatically reduced rent. The Bank Street Board of Trustees and our new president Shael Polakow-Suransky, have arranged for the bookstore to move there early next year. Bank Street Bookstore will continue, with your support, to serve you for many years to come. Here is a link to the College's official announcement of Bank Street Bookstore’s move and to yesterday’s article featuring Bank Street Bookstore in The New York Times.

Best, Andy Laties
