The Little Green Goose manages to tackle several "issues" - adoption, single fatherhood, intolerance, - all in the context of a most enjoyable story. Mr. Goose lives on a farm with a rooster, some chickens, and lots of little chicks. He loves being an uncle to the chicks, but he yearns for a child of his own. When the farm dog finds a mysterious egg, Mr. Goose is able to fulfill his dream. He takes great care of the egg until, one day, a little goose - bright green, scaly, with a tail - hatches. Mr. Goose and his little green goose have a wonderful relationship until some barnyeard teasing about his origins gets the better of little green goose. He runs away to find his mother. It is not until, rejected by a frog, fish, and lizard, tired and hungry, little green goose realizes something important. "Suddenly he leaped to his feet and began to run. He knew just where to find his real mother. He ran faster and faster. "Mama! Mama!" he called. "It's about time you came home for supper," said Mr. Goose fondly. "But I'm not your mother, I'm your father."
