My Dadima Wears a Sari
[9781561453924]
$16.95 $15.26

Author: Kashmira Sheth
Illustrator: Yoshiko Jaeggi
Format: Paperback
Published: Peachtree Publishers, 2007

Rupa's Dadima (grandmother) wears a sari every day. Rupa admires the beautiful, brightly-colored cotton and silk saris, but wonders if her dadmia might like to wear something else, perhaps a gray skirt or a pair of pants with pockets. But Rupa's patient grandmother explains that she prefers to wear a sari - after all a sari can be useful as an impromptu umbrella in the rain or a pouch for collecting seashells. Together, Rupa and her Dadmia imagine lots of interesting uses for a sari, including hiding from tigers and playing hide-and-seek with little sisters. Then Dadima shows Rupa her three favorite saris - the yellow polka dot one that was her first sari, the pink one she wore when she moved from India to America, and the red silk sari stiched in gold that she wore at her wedding. A final page includes photographs and instructions for wrapping a sari. A wonderful book, My Dadima Wears a Sari perfectly captures a loving relationship between grandmother and child while conveying a special regard for the clothes and customs of other cultures. Told mostly in dialogue, the story will leave readers feeling that they know the characters.
