At Bank Street Book Store’s Grand Opening, a Host of Authors Will Gather to Celebrate an Upper West Side Tradition in Children’s Literature
Bank Street College of Education has long been at the heart of an American tradition in children’s literature, so when the call went out for authors to appear at the grand opening of Bank Street Book Store’s new location, dozens responded with enthusiasm and delighted affirmation.
Thirty accomplished children’s authors and illustrators, including winners of Caldecott and Newbery awards, are slated to appear at the gala ribbon-cutting, which will feature remarks by New York State Assemblymember Daniel O’Donnell and Bank Street President Shael Polakow-Suransky.
The Saturday, March 7 event will last from 10 am - 6 pm. There will be guest author readings throughout the day.
“Bank Street anchors a robust community of children’s authors,” says bookstore manager Andy Laties. “From the days of Margaret Wise Brown and Maurice Sendak, Bank Street has been an institution that supports creators of innovative children’s literature through its Writer’s Lab, its Children’s Book Committee Awards, and the Center for Children’s Literature’s Irma Black Award and Cook Prize.
“The Upper West Side has a heritage of children’s literature. There are so many authors within this community. Judging by their response to our invitations, I think they’re elated at the idea of this kind of neighborhood event.”
