Book Explorations

The intrepid Bank Street Book Store staff covered BookExpo by walking miles of aisles at New York City's Javits Center to spot the latest and greatest in children's book publishing. We will proudly bring many of our finds to the bookstore in the weeks and months ahead. The motto below is one we should all live by!

Kissed by a Kangaroo!

On Saturday, June 3, Bank Street Book Store welcomes Nandana Dev Sen as a special guest during morning story time. Join us at 10:30 a.m. when Nandana reads her book "Kangaroo Kisses" and encourages children and families to laugh at, recognize, and enjoy the often familiar "art" of postponing bedtime routines. A real art activity relating to the book follows the reading.

Saturday Story Time in English and Spanish

Greet the new day with a meditation session courtesy of yoga teacher Motha Nature, who assists children (and grownups) with mindful poses and practices. Her morning greeting helps us welcome author Thornton Cline to Bank Street Book Store for an English/Spanish reading of his book "The Incredible Shrinking Violin" (also known as "El increible, sorprendente violin que se encogia"). The Spanish version will be read by the book's translator Mary Escalante. Both the yoga and the reading are wonderful ways to start the holiday weekend and we hope you join us on Saturday, May 27 at 10:30 a.m. at 2780 Broadway at the corner of West 107th Street. This event is for all ages.

Graphic Novel Version of "Litte Mermaid"

A classic story is one that can be reworked and retold through the ages to remain a forever favorite. The latest version of "The Little Mermaid" by Metaphrog is a perfect example of how to rethink the Hans Christian Andersen original as a graphic novel. Artists John Chalmers and Sandra Marrs conceived this adaptation and brought it to life through words and images that tell the story in fantastic new ways. See this new version -- full of the familiar and the new -- at Bank Street Book Store on Sunday, May 21 at 2:00 p.m.
