Celebrate Independent Bookstores on Saturday, April 28 at Bank Street Bookstore

As much as we all appreciate the convenience of e-commerce, readers around the city feel incredibly lucky to have local booksellers in their neighborhoods. Bank Street Bookstore, New York's premier bookstore for young readers, has been a Morningside Heights landmark for families since their children's children were children. Join us to celebrate the continuing tradition of buying and browsing at 2780 Broadway. Stop by for a special Independent Bookstore Day event on Saturday, April 28 at 10:30 a.m. and meet two great guests: author/illustrator Tim Miller and illustrator Misa Saburi. Their wonderful books will be presented and signed -- and you will be in the good company of other families who value extending the life of any and all bookstores throughout our fair city.

"Monsters Beware" Author Jorge Aguirre Reads without Walls at Bank Street Bookstore on Earth Day, April 22

Children are true citizens of the planet because every day they learn about how to get along in the world. That's why Bank Street Bookstore is taking an approach to Earth Day 2018 that includes consideration of the planet as well as its people. We are proud to participate in Macmillan Publishing's READING WITHOUT WALLS program by presenting author Jorge Aguirre as a special guest. On Sunday, April 22 at 10:30 a.m. Jorge will share his book "Monsters Beware!," challenging young readers to choose books featuring characters who might see, feel, or think differently than they do. Jorge will read and talk about the themes of difference and diversity (also featured in his books "Dragons Beware!" and "Giants Beware!") that kids enjoy encountering on the written page. Join us at 2780 Broadway to kick off an engaging and thoughtful Earth Day.

April Is National Poetry Month

In a salute to the unforgettable voices of poets past and present, Bank Street Bookstore celebrates National Poetry Month throughout April. It is an apt time to acknowledge those who elevate thoughts, words, and images to become art on the printed page. One of our country's favorite poets is Langston Hughes, whose New York City brownstone is alive with the sound of written traditions thanks to the efforts of writer Renée Watson. Watch this segment from "CBS This Morning" for information on Renée and the I, Too, Collective arts organization she founded in the former Hughes home to bring together voices young and old in celebration of reading, literacy, and poems.
