"Dialectal Variations" with Karina Otoya-Knapp and Jamilla Lyiscott

Karina Otoya-Knapp, Ph.D., Graduate Faculty member at Bank Street College, and Jamila Lyiscott, doctoral student at Teachers College, lead a discussion about dialect, power and race.

Jamila will perform her urban spoken word poem, "Broken English", which heightens awareness about the dialectal variations of English in the United States. Together Karina and Jamila will discuss the implications of language diversity as it applies to New York City K-12 students, and guide the audience through a series of teaching exercises that raise questions about language, diversity and equity in urban schools.

This event is a repeat of the wonderful class given last Fall documented in the video below. Those who were lucky enough to be there last time, may just want to come back!
