Bweela Steptoe is the daughter of award-winning children’s author and illustrator John Steptoe. As well as the model of many of John Steptoe’s books including the most famous book Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughter’s. Her mission is to educate and share the legacy of her father, John Lewis Steptoe with the world. In honor of her father she has founded The John Lewis Steptoe Cultural Center, a not for profit organization she started to share the legacy and creativity of JLS. The John Lewis Steptoe Cultural Center provides art workshops, lectures and unique learning experiences for children, families and educational organizations in his childhood community of Bedford-Stuyvesant (Brooklyn, NY). She travels to present, teach and give lectures focused on John Steptoe, his artwork, life and her life growing up with him. She is currently promoting the reissues of her father’s books in which she has written the forewords for and is working on a documentary that is set to be released the summer of 2020.

Bweela Steptoe is the mother of twin daughters who are currently attending their last year in colleges out of state. Bweela Steptoe became a contributing author for an anthology in 2016 with 19 other authors; Delay But Not Denied, 20 Inspirational Stories About Life And Resiliency, A Mother’s Love And Fight For Her Daughters; dealing with life and resiliency. In her chapter, she talks about the struggle and hardships she went through having two daughters that were faced with different learning styles that are viewed as learning disabilities.
